This course provides an introduction to the study of the history, main doctrines, and practices of the major Chinese religions and spiritual practices and is designed to give conceptual tools to appreciate diverse religious practice in China. It covers the development of Buddhism, Daoism, Confucianism and wide range of popular and local religions as well as Chinese mythology

Chinese religion is more “teacher-oriented” than “doctrine-oriented” or “institute-oriented” , so personal masters, local doctrines, sects and small schools played much more important role than any official religious institution. 


The Rise of Modern China (eng.)

       The course covers a long period from the late-imperial China (middle of 19 c.) up to the present days and focuses on the China’s «long modernization» growing from the semi-colonial  country up to the leading power in the world that tries to reconstruct the modern global situation.  Beside main historical events of this period we will analyze the main economic and political trends, theories and practices of the communism and nationalism in the China’s history, as well post-totalitarian modernization of China and present day trends in leadership and socio-political structures. 

The great transformations are routed at the beginning of the self-identity processes that with the  clash with foreign powers in the middle of 19 c., followed by the total deconstruction of old imperial regime, overcoming of «soviet model for China»   and realized in the reconstruction of national state with high level of ambitions, economic and military power. 


Making of Modern Asia (eng)

This introductory course focuses on the cultural, historical, social and economic background in East and South-East Asia including the cultural anthropology of Asia, natural environment, food and agriculture, historical roots, the nature of state power, social forces, traditional and modern economic development, major powers relationships and the future of Asian geopolitics in the 21st century. The legacy of history, traditional political culture, cross-border conflicts and alliances play very important role in the modern-day political situation in Asia. 

Power, authority, and the advent of democracy in Asia; Russia in Pacific Asia; regional dynamics, regional and global perspectives of Asia Pacific; new trends in Asia: isolation, integration, and changes, etc.
